UPDATE:
Thought I'd whip up a little vid in a free video editor just to get an idea of a couple ways to add pressure to important kicks on goal (such as after the siren). This is new to me, so hopefully it's not too bad!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Just wondering what everybody's thoughts are on a potential pressure system. I've seen in NBA2K games they go a bit overboard with things like camera shake which you can see in this video:
What do people think about having the controller vibrate a bit if you're taking a set shot playing away from home, with a certain amount of time left in the quarter, when scores are close late or for kicks after the siren?
Personally I'm not a fan of a seizure inducing camera shake, but a vibration could throw you off a little bit and make it more interesting
The gaming developers need to give you some kind of position. I have followed a couple of your posts and your suggestions hit the sweet spot for all of us. In accordance with the experience of the game, I think you have done well drawing on other sporting games (Golf, NBA) this is quite clever. You have got me absolutely hyped and I appreciate you taking the time to provide functional and realistic features to improve the overall experience of the game. If possible, could I grab an email? I would like to discuss promoting your suggestions on other media platforms (I have a decent base of followers - 22k instagram - 9k subscribers YouTube) Thanks mate!
@GunshyFire i agree. I think a pressure system would create great atmosphere. like you say the vibrate/camera shake would be annoying but perhaps just the set shot bar UI shake/jitter or the green area is even smaller with more orange to effect the accuracy could be effective? and if it is a real pressure moment i.e. after the siren to win it or closing in with a few minutes to spare, other little additions such as slightly amplified crowd cheers (home crowd)or jeers (away crowd), a new animation for the player kicking the shot if he nails it, if it is a long shot have a slightly amplified deep kick sound to emphasise. what would be harder is for pressure moments where it is in free play and not set shot, how do you create those moments.
in terms of set shot i think to improve they could add in a third element that reflects accuracy more. atm you simply aim the player to account for the wind and then just push in the green area for the right length. obviously making set shots too difficult/complicated take away from the enjoyment.....
I think pressure is needed, but it’s still just one factor in making set shots interesting/difficult.
i like the vibration idea.
And for camera shake... I don’t mind it too much.
but possibly something else is needed, that would need to tie in with the chosen mechanism used for set shot execution.
It’s interesting how this mechanism has been approached in past AFL games in different ways. The NES had the moving line in between the posts. One mid 2000s game had the angled arrow.... another has a pulsing circle...
those seemed harder to pull off than they current ‘point at goal and try get the power bar right’.
For pressure, say if the mechanism was a pulsing circle, that pulse could be made quicker and therefore harder to get right.
Each pulse could be a step in the run up... and if you wait too many pulses, you could kick into the man on the mark.
Saying that, I would like to see something done with controlling the man on the mark too... as in, the opposition team have something to do when you’re lining up... some way to legitimately put the kicker off, or add pressure to the kick.
Maybe some waving arms around that affects the kicker’s mechanism... and then a well timed jump on the mark, along with a poor execution of the kick, could mean it gets touched off the boot.
Just a few ideas, that could make that a whole mini-game in itself.
goal kicking is abit easy. However, your controller does/should start vibrating like a heart beat when your taking a shot after the siren to win.
Love the new video. Great work putting it together.
I think the visual effect is good.... could also add some dramatic tension to it by maybe adding a vignette image effect to 'focus' on the kicker (like CoD 'hold breath' moment).
All this is visual... but it would be nice to tie it into the performance of the actual shot.
i.e the camera shake would only work if the actual shot mechanism is shaking... so the current 'line it up and shoot' mechanism wouldn't really be affected.... but if it were the old 'angled arrow' that was shaking, then performing the clutch shot is much harder.
Again, there could be many factors here....like I mentioned....the player on the mark putting them off.... the player's 'clutch' ability... home game/away game....etc.
You'd want a way to make it a huge achievement to kick the goal.... but also balance how you can win/fail in these scenarios.
Hey @GunshyFire thanks for starting this discussion. We currently have a heartbeat sound + controller vibration for after the siren kicks, but they might be too subtle to make any "pressure" impact to the player. We'll consider cranking these up a little bit too see if that helps. We'll also take into consideration the discussions in this thread for future reference!
